Ideas of Location

This is a dark and a quite location where my sequence could be filmed.

This location is in the Hamptons, where there are luxury large houses. I could definitely consider this location as an idea for my film becasue this area seems to look like its outside the UK. the houses does not really look like British houses, this way my film could be intresting.

This is a longshot of an alley way which could be used as a location for my film sequence, it may be used where someone is being abused and attacked this is becasue it is iscolated and there are large fences covering the path, where no one can see the attack.

This could be a great location for my film, it is in Kingston. This may be used in a chase sequence or where someone is meeting onaother character. Its a great location because it does get very busy which may be good and ideal for my films purpose.

This is in my garden I may use this location, I have many tolls and equipment which may be needed in my film. also its long and wide which may be usefull for my film.

This is in Kingston highstreet, it is very busy at al times which I could take for advantage. if my film needs a scene where there I need a croud of people walking around and a busy atmosphere. this would be the perfect location for me.

Sixth Sense Analysis

Sixth Sense

At the very beginning there is the company’s logo the distributor of the film and the co-operation, studio who are also part of creating the film. This is shown so the audience are clearly aware of who has a part in this film. After this there the titles that appear, the titles come out very slowly at the audience, this makes the audience feel cringed because the atmosphere of the whole screen, where also the sound affects start to come in when the titles move slowly. The sound is an echo and a humming typing sound however the frequency changes into high pitch, when the ‘Sixth Sense’ title appears on the screen. The titles are moving slowly which is usually seen as ghostly because it is very slow and ‘spooky’. The title and the sound straight away inform the audience that this movie is a thriller and not a comedy. This whole opening sequence usually is very important because it reflects how the film is going to be straightaway to the audience. Meaning because it’s a thriller genre, the titles come out at the audience and then reverse back into the black dark background which represents danger and the unknown. This is a good opening sequence because it does its job very well, which is to sink the audience into the film. The title appears slowly and the non- diegetic sound starts to play. The first two screen shots appear slowly, sound is used to hook the audience into the film and prepare them to watch it. The colour of the font is blue and is serif font; the letters are spaced out from each other. The words appear on top of the dark gloomy background, which feels uncomfortable to watch because as an audience I feel something may pop out and make me jump, as this is what the stereotyped views of thriller movies are.

Scene and location?
The film started off with a black out, then a bulb started to light up very slowly, the type of shot which is used is a medium shot of the bulb. Also the rule of third has been used into this frame where the bulb is on the left side of the screen. The establishing shot is a mid shot in the cellar this is obvious because the old wooden stair case and the spider webs which are on the wood. The character who is the women, she walks down the stairs. This type of camera shot is behind the shelves which look as if someone is watching her. The atmosphere of this is very uncomfortable because it is very quiet. It feels like someone is there with her. This establishing shot is very good because it condones these feelings to the audience straight away. This medium shot indicates to the viewer that this location may be very old because this type of light is being used which is old fashioned. As the women comes closer to the camera, the camera pans as she moves down looking for the wine she wants. This panning, follows her down as she finds it, this affect feels like it is the audience watching her.

As the camera pans closer to her face she looks afraid, and she turns around which continuity is used where the next shot, she is turned around however the cinematography is different it is a long shot of the women. The mise-en-scene is a low key shot where there is allot of darkness and the women’s shadow is very dark. The shot after this is another long shot of her; these long shots may be used to set the scene, as well as to show that she is alone in the cellar. The next scene in the sequence is a medium shot of cards and romantic candles lighted up. The colour red is mainly showing this represents love, warmness, comfortable and happiness. This scene is a complete different type of mood compared to the cellar.

The props in the sequence are the women’s multi coloured dress, it is purple dark gloomy colours which clearly express cold dark and danger. It’s not red and bright which expresses happiness. Her dress expresses the opposite mood. The light bulb is also a prop, when the light bulb slowly lights up this can link with the thriller movie just about to start, because this is the first shot the audience see. Also the candles which are shown after the cellar scene this scene is a different feeling , it is more warm and happiness, because it looks very romantic.

What does a title sequence look like ?

What does a title sequence look like ?
Title sequence named ‘Kill Your Friends’. Kill Your Friends was made by an amateur producer who wanted to make a point which is “you don’t need money to make magic’ there budget for this was only £350. This title sequence has many features and has many conventions. Usually at first, in a title sequence there is the production company and logo which is shown to the audience. So they are aware of who is part of the film.
The title appears in the screen in a very creative way, they are not title that scroll on the screen, and they are on objects such as a beer bottle. The titles are put onto objects that link with the subject such as the person who made sound; their name was shown on a cd. Many objects such as books, Cds and so on, this make it more interesting because it also informs the audience with the situation. As soon as the title sequence starts there are panning shots and close ups of objects that relate to drinking, drugs, also the room is very messy, where the glass bottles are Brocken and all over the floor, needles are lying on the floor. This indicates that someone must have had a party in their apartment. All of this panning and close ups build up some tension straight away because the audience wants to know what has happened after this party, has some one died. The audience will have many thoughts and questions in their head that they would like to be answered. This is why this title sequence is really good and it works because it bonds with the audience straight away.
The title sequence of Kill Your Friends links in with my chosen genre which is a thriller, not only does the title sequence have a connection with the genre, it also has a similar them where it’s about death.

Analysis of Momento 2

The opening sequence for the movie ‘Memento’ is good, because it uses the main conventions to condone itself as a thriller. The good aspects of it are that the titles straightaway inform the audience that it is a genre of thriller and not a comedy. This then allows the audience to be prepared for it, the in tensed non diegetic sound enhances the creepy feeling of the background. This then changes into a hand with a photograph in it.
This makes a good opening sequence because it has the correct sound, the blue font on the titles condone the mysteriousness. The black background also helps the audience to be prepared for the unknown.

Analysis of 'Memento' 1

I will be analysing the opening sequence of the movie 'Memento' which was released in 2002, filmed in the USA and directed by Christopher Nolan. There are many conventions in the opening sequence which is successful in making it enjoyable to watch.

The title 'Memento' appears at the beginning of the movie, the font is in bold, with block letters in light blue. The letters are spread out from the word; there is space between each letter. This title stays on the screen for a while, continues to stay on the foreground of the establishing shot, where there is the close up of the hand and the photograph. Straight away this title has an affect on the audience because it makes them feel ready to watch the movie. The title has a slow transition which fades away, this affects the audience because it automatically puts them into a soft calm atmosphere, ready to watch the film.

The opening sequence of the movie is abandoned buildings which look very old, when the viewer see's this they automatically feel and know that it is a thriller due to the doll building being shown. The scene , location is dark and gloomy, this has been chosen to make the audience feel creepy.

Mains Props Used
The main props used, is the palaroid picture which is being shaken, when being shaken the appearance changes. This still photograph straight away gives the audience information about the film and reveals why maybe the film is called 'Memento'.

The camera shots are very steady and still, there are'nt many quick shots at the begining of the movie becasue its drawing in the audience with small information, allowing them to take it in slowly. The transitions between the black out and the establishing shot is a slow paced movement. It is slow, so it can make the audience feel down and more to start thinking what this film is going to be about? and so on.

How does the opening sequence relate to the rest of the film?
The opening sequence relates to the rest of the film as it shows what happens between the two main characters. in the film there is the flash backs and repeated shots from the opening sequence which is repeated to reveal why it has happened. Also the opening sequence is the end of the film but its shown differently.

Analysis of the opening sequence of 'Sins'

This is the opening sequence of ‘Sins’ this piece of footage is extremely similar to ‘Se7en’ they both give out similar affects to the audience. Cringe and afraid feeling, when the audience watch this they would feel anxious because of the hints of violence, blood and glory being shown through objects such as the razor blade, needle and the way the unknown of the character is being expressed, its mostly close-ups of what he, she is doing.
Sound

At the beginning of the opening sequence the sound starts to play immediately it is non–diegetic music, the type of music I would say it is like rock, it’s not very clear it has the scratchy sound to it, which makes it seem old. When the title appears on the screen, drums start to play which gives out a fast and adrenaline affect. Middle of the opening sequence an unclear voiceover starts to play, it contains explicit language, ‘fuck’ and so on. This straightaway informs the audience that this movie could certainly have violence scenes. The explicit language expresses anger and rage and shows the feelings of the character.

Mise-en-scene

The mise-en-scene of the opening sequence is very doll; the colours are mainly black and white which represents unknown and danger. There are many shots of darkness and silhouette type, which condones to the audience that the character is mysterious. The cinematography is used very well; it is mainly close-ups and extreme close-ups. It is like this so the great detail can be shown for example the razor blade, as a viewer I can see the sharpness of the small object. There is also a lot of black outs, with the credits appearing, this emphasises the violence almost gives the feeling of death, because in the opening sequence there is the character getting something prepared. Then suddenly there is a repeated shot of the black screen which may try hinting that someone is going to die and it could be more than one person. There is many close ups of photographs, and objects which clearly tells the audience that they are very important belongings to the character who is unknown.

Editing
The editing within the opening sequence looks a little old fashioned. This is because the frame is not clear it has some blurred shots which may represent destruct and someone’s life being taken away. The use of shot-reverse shot has been applied and many quick camera shots of the hand at the beginning of the sequence, this expresses stress and strain of a character. The editing of the title ‘Sins’ flashes very quickly and comes out at the audience. There is many transitions such as dissolve, wipe, jump cut, slow motion which helps to make the continuity more affective at some points.

Fringe the title sequence

(Research) The opening sequence of Kill Bill

This is the opening sequence for ‘Kill Bill’. This is very different to the trailer because the trailer was being narrated and it was the overview of the film. However this opening scene is just the beginning section of the film.

There are many conventions in sound, for example at the beginning, there is hyperbolic sound used to emphasize deep breathing, this usually seen as being afraid. Also the walking is hyperbolic this informs the audience that someone is coming, the sound clip is quite long it leaves the audience with the question, who is it?

In Kill Bill the mise-en-scene has low key settings which represent danger and violence, this is exactly what is happening to the women she is being injured and harmed. The colour of the screen is black and white. The main editing is the colour scheme of the frame. The use of shots is close up of the women’s face and extreme close up of the boots moving.

KILL BILL Volume1 - Trailer ( 2003 )

This is the trailer for ‘Kill Bill’ that was released in 2003. This trailer contains fast shots; different types of cinematography used which makes the trailer more interesting and fun to watch. This trailer is being narrated by the main character the women who is revenging. She informs the audience what is happening and what is going to happen. This way the audience would want to know what happens next if she achieves her targets on the victims.

Movie Trailer of Salt

Analysis on My chosen opening sequence ..

salt.php.jpg

This is the movie trailer of Salt which came out in 2010. This thriller movie trailer, is a little different compared to other thriller trailers. This movie trailer starts of with slow, long paced transitions, however the action starts to impact the audience when the non-diegetic music begins, where the characters performance starts to become a lot quicker actions. When the characters performance starts to tense, the shots also start to become more fast. This affects the audience it makes them want to know what happens next does she get away? the tension builds at 1.01 minutes. The trailer contains titles and informs the audience when the film will be released, the music becomes extremely tensed and there is a point where the shots change every second, this represents fast movements and so on.

Trailer of the movie SE7EN

This is the trailer of the movie ‘Se7en’ that came out in 1995. It is an action packed trailer it contains the conventions a thriller trailer should have. At the beginning of the trailer, there are fast camera shots, with quick transitions. This has the affect on an audience it makes them feel unprepared meaning they are not ready for it. The title come at the audience, which builds up tension this, is where the thriller comes in. The clip is 2.17 minute long, it has the most ‘best action filled parts’, which persuades the audience to go and watch the full movie. There is also the
non diegetic sound which is drums playing fast, and the voice over of the man narrating the trailer. This has an affect on the audience it makes them feel they need to watch the full movie, to know what really happens in the film.

The Sixth Sense, Movie Trailer

This is the trailer of the movie Sixth Sense that came out in 1999. This is known as a trailer because the trailer contains the most exciting parts, most fun parts of the film in a montage, this is so it can hook the audience to go and watch the full movie. This trailer has most of the conventions a trailer needs, to appeal to an audience.

For example

• An overview of the story/plot
• Grab the audience attention
• The good, main parts of the film
• Quick shots to make an exciting mood
• Who is starring in the film
• When it comes out
• Voice over, narrates the film

Difference between an opening sequence and a trailer

There are many differences between a trailer and opening scene of a film. A trailer is a clip of different shots and scenes from a movie, it contains the most attractive and enjoyable scenes from the actual film that is going to be released. A trailer comes out before the film and it is very much like a montage and is made to try and persuade the audience to go and pay to watch the whole movie. It is a clip, which is condones the movie it will contain many types of media technique aspects such as sound, different types of camera shots and so on. The big difference is a trailer is more compact and contains quick shots and summarizes the film but leaves a cliffhanger. An opening scene contains the credits of producers and the makers of the film; this is so the audience slowly gets into the film and the atmosphere of it. A trailer summarises the film however it does not show the possotive equilibrium at the end of the film, it stops when the bad at the thrilling and bad part.

What Titles?

Titles are a sequence of writing that appears before the film starts and in some cases while the film is showing, they include who directed the film and the actors and important information about the film like where it may be set. Also at the beginning of the film there is the production company’s logo and name shown to the audience, so they are aware who made it.
Titles coming into the film in many different ways, they can mould a type of feeling into an audience. For example the Sixth Sense title sequence appeared slowly from the dark, black background this symbolised unknown and gave a creepy feel.

My Feedback on Preliminary Task

Www-
In my Preliminary task I used good cinematography at the right time for example when There was a shot of Jacks facial expression, the shot used was a close up to show and express his feelings. There also is an establishing shot at the beginning of my film to inform the audience were it is based and the scenery. I was told I used Shot revers shot very well, and my cinematography was interesting with this I also used the 180 degree rule. This makes the clip more interesting and realistic because if the rule is not used the footage is not believable for the audience. My continuity was also very good, I was told the scene, were I hand-shake Jack was well edited because the two different shots flowed together.

Ebi-
The parts which was not as good was were I did not use the continuity editing well on the clock, the mistake was were the was three shots of the clock but with different times which was not good. I should speak a little louder in my next task because my voice was quite low and unclear.
Taking on my Ebi's I am going to make sure I improve by doing them on my next task.

Preliminary task

In my first lesson of my preliminary task I had to create footage of a very simple action which was to film a character that walks through a room, opens a door and sits down and haves a conversation with another character. To create this piece of film with my partner Jack Davenport I had to do planning, which I learnt from my other lesson, it was vital that I had made my planning very clear and with as much annotation as I could put. I did a storyboard of my idea, who agreed with some of my ideas. I worked very well and communicated my ideas and so did he. This made my understanding very strong and allowed both of us to develop brighter ideas. Me and my partner always thought about the mise-en-scene and tried to remember all the techniques we can apply when filming. I thought about the frames and what will be in the background and the foreground. When I made my plan I used arrows to show and indicate the movements of the camera and the directions it will move. I made sure I used the rule of third when filming and made sure I did not exceed the 180 degree rule when filming. I applied this rule when I filmed the over the shoulder scenes I also used the match on action.

With this I made sure I didn’t cross the invisible line and also I used different type of cinematography such as
• Close ups
• Extreme close ups
• Long shots which is known as the establishing shot
• Mid shot
• Over the shoulder
Also I used dialogue when there was conversations in the scene of the over shoulder shot.
Even better if
I had more time to finish it completely, and if I could mend it after receiving more information on what didn’t go so well.

The Brief

My brief is to create the titles and opening of a new fiction film, to last a maximum of two minutes. I a have chosen to do a action/ thriller genre. I will be doing a lot of research for this genre so I am aware of the different conventions for this.

My first blog practise

Uploading an image to my blog.
To upload an image to my blog I used many steps
1st step - i clicked on view blog
2nd step- i clicked on post new
3rd step- i clicked on upload an image
4th step- i clicked on publish post

Donnie Darko EBI

I feel I had many problems recreating the film footage for Donnie Darko, it may be due to many factors such as not makeing percise planning also I feel the communication with group was not too great it was'nt too strong.
However I feel I have learnt from this very big mistake and next time will make my planning with more annotation.

WWW

I feel I did very good on the first task which was Push a Button this is because my camera skills were very good, I used many techniques such as the rule of thirds and I also always thought about what will be in the mise-en-scene when filming. The editing was good because the timing with the sound track was accurate. I really enjoyed the task I feel this is because I had very strong and well communication with my group which meant everyone knew what will be filmed and how.

Induction Task Ebi

Even better if -
my induction task was good, however If I had more time I could of used more different types of angle shots when filming. Also I would like to improve on my Mac skills , meaning how to import my film correctly and how to make the right cuts when editing.
