Examples of the type of font for my Title

Here are example's of the type's of font I would like to use for my title sequence.

Font type for my titles
I have chosen to use the titles above because I feel the texture of the titles express the genre which is thriller. The black and white could hint to the audience unstableness, danger many other serious thoughts. As an audience, they would feel anxious, nervous as soon as they see the title because the name itself seized represents someone grapping something or someone. This is the link with the killer in the opening sequence who plans to kill people as he is a psycho. The sketch affect on the font resembles and links with the killer who is drawing the girl on paper. The roughness of the font expresses the instability of this unknown killer who seems to be not a normal person. The sharpness in the title represents what is going to happen later on the movie.

Shot Lists

Shot 1
This will be a mid-shot of the title which will be shown in a black screen to make it more effective. We have chosen a mid-shot because it does not fill up the screen too much and the everyone in the audience will be able to see the title clearly.

Shot 2
This will also be a mid-shot as this is of a picture of Jessica, she does not know that this picture has been taken of her and also the picture of Jessica fades into the background of the title and so a mid-shot would be ideal for this because once again the title does not take up to much of the film and the picture of Jessica in the background would be good as a mid-shot because it is not standing out too much to the audience but it is still there for the audience to see.

Shot 3
This will be a mid-shot of developing the pictures in the dark room and we have chosen to make this a mid-shot because it shows most of the room and does not fill up the screen too much.

Shot 4
This will be a close-up of a hand with a glove on developing the picture, we decided to make this a close-up because it shows something sinister going on here and we also want to see what this person is developing.

Shot 5
This is going to be a panning and establishing shot and we decided this because we wanted to show the objects around the room as the room looks quite sinister. We decided on an establishing shot because this shows most of the room.

Shot 6
This will be many close-ups of difference weapons going along, we decided on this because we wanted the show the weapons in detail and we wanted to show all of the different types of tools that this killer could be using.

Shot 7
This is yet again another close-up and this will be of papers and missing posters, we want to show this using a close-up because we want to show the pictures on these posters and papers and perhaps some of the print.

Shot 8
This is going to be an over the shoulder shot of the killer and this will be in black and white because this is showing memories of the killer and his past killings. We have decided to use an over the shoulder shot because we are showing the killer's next victim.

Shot 9
This will be a medium shot and this will be seeing the killer drug the girl and put her in the boot. We have decided on this type of shot because it shows quite a bit of what is going on and it is not to close and not to far away.

Shot 10
This will be another medium shot of seeing and girl get drugged by the killer and we have chosen this kind of shot because once again it is showing everything.

Shot 11
This will be a wide mid-shot of one of the killer's victims lying on the back seat of the car and we have chosen this because it shows a lot of what is going on and this is what the viewers are going to want to see.

Shot 12
We will be showing the next shot as a moving subject walking into space and this will be of Jessica walking through the forest at night. We chose this particular shot because we wanted to let the audience feel as if they are involved because it feels as if you are walking with Jessica.

Shot 13
This will be a close-up of the killer's feet and we wanted to show this in a close-up because we wanted to show the audience that Jessica is being followed and because we are not going to see killer's face we wanted to show some part of the killer following Jessica.

Shot 14
This will be a side mid-shot of Jessica hearing the killer's footsteps and this is also where she stops and looks around to the killer. We wanted to show this in a mid-shot because we wanted to show most of Jessica's body language when she sees the killer.

Shot 15
This will be a mid-shot of the titles when they appear on this screen.

Shot List for Media Studies[1]

Initial Ideas

These were some of the ideas that got took down when we were working in our groups.

Storyboard

This is a storyboard of our film, some of the pictures are not finished as it was difficult to know what to draw on the storyboard. What is written on the storyboard is quite detailed, detailed enough for our group to know exactly what we are doing in our film and who has what role.

Morden Park -Location

Here are the shots of my actual scene where I will be filming my opening sequence, it is perfect for my sequence becasue it represents danger and straight away as an audience will be prepared for something to go wrong. The trees and the lighting will also help make it feel mysterious.

Props, Costume, Location & Script

using the props annotated

In today’s lesson we decided to plan what props we are going to use, what costumes each character is going to wear and why (what the costume represents and how it reflects the character’s personality) as well as planning our location, script, shooting schedule and character description for our opening description.

Props & Costumes

Props

Car – We will be using this prop for the sound effect of a car boot slamming and as a car itself.

Knives – We are using this prop to represent one of the pieces of weaponry that the killer is planning on using

Photographs – We will be using many photographs to show how many people the killer has killed.

Posters – We are using posters to show the people that have gone missing.

Costumes

Donna (Jessica) – Will be wearing light colors to represent her innocence.

Alisha & Sophie – Will be wearing a red top to represent death

Shehabur – Will be wearing black to represent an evil and sinister demeanor.

Location

Morden Park – We will be using this location when someone driving his or her car sees the victim and when she is running away from her potential killer.

PDH/DH3 – This location will be used when the killer is laying out and planning what weaponry to use to carry out the killing of the protagonist.

Photography Dark Room – This location will be used to show the killer developing a photograph of the victim (protagonist) that he is potentially going to kill.

Script

Although there is going to be no dialogue in our opening sequence we felt it was necessary to devise a script to show what sound effects and music we will be using.

Footsteps – To represent the killer following the victim in the park

Heavy Breathing – To represent the victim’s feelings of being frightened and scared.

Car Boot Slam – To represent the killer slamming down the boot of the car but the audience not knowing why he did it and what is in the boot.

Loud Scream – This will be used at the beginning of the opening sequence

Devised Piece of Music – We will be using a personally created piece of music so that it is original and has not been used before in previous thriller films.

Although there is going to be no dialogue in our opening sequence we felt it was necessary to devise a script to show what sound effects and music we will be using.

Sound of cutting with a knife and the killer drawing a picture of the main character in our film. This will be used in our film to make it more real and gripping to watch.

Character Description

Jessica starred by Donna (Victim)-

She is the main character of the opening sequence; she is walking through a park at night, where she is then kidnapped. In the opening sequence she is not known and the audience don’t have much information on what she is doing and the personalities she has. However this is then shaped by images, which will be shown in the background on the walls of her and her friends these images will show the audience that she is a happy character. Jessica is going to be wearing grey jeans with a red top. This is specifically chosen, so it expresses her innocents and the red represents blood and glory, which then links to what may happen after she is kidnapped.

Killer starred by Shehabur-

Who has no name because he is unknown and therefore the audience does not know who he is and how he looks like. The clothing he will be dressed in will be dark and mainly black. This is so he does not stand out in the dark; he will be less visible than Jessica. The characteristic of this character will be shown through his performance and the actions he caries out. Such as where he is planning to kidnap the victim and the sharp and deadly equipment he is going to use. There is no dialogue in the opening sequence however his actions will clearly express him and how he is as a person. I am unkown therefore in many of the shots of my opening sequence my face is not vissible. It is either not in the frame, or it has dark and low-key lighting, in my sequence there will be a lot of quick falshing shots. Which represent fear and build tension, when the victim is being followed.

Casting to our film

Casting:

As a group we wanted our film to be creative, different and to make the audience want to see more. We chose Donna as the main character because she would play a good part of the character Jessica who is the missing girl in our film. We used the character of Jessica because we have seen in the news the amount of disappearances that have happened lately, so we thought it would be appropriate and realist in everyday life. In this type of drams there is also a killer/bad man, so we wanted our film to show what he/she goes thought to get ready for the kidnapping and what they use. As a group we thought this would be effective and a good way to open our film.

Character Description

Shooting Schedule

Shooting Schedule
Donna created this shooting schedule and all of the group gave Donna the information as to when they had free time to film and so with that information Donna made this shooting schedule. A shooting schedule is when you plan your time out so that you know when you can film and if you have enough time to film.

Questionnaire

This is my Questionnaire to a group of people who I believe is going to be my target audience, I have also handed out this survey to people who are not classed in my target audience, this is so I can clearly see if they still get attracted, and I may be wrong with the type of audience I want to focus on for my thriller opening sequence.

Thriller Synopsis

We firstly see the killer planning what is going to happen to the next victim, we will see many shots of the pictures of the killer’s victim as well as newspaper cut-outs and what kinds of weaponry that the killer is going to decide to use on his victim all in alignment with each other. After the killer has been seen planning the next victim’s fate we also see past memories of the killer’s previous victims, but we only see some shots of what happened to these people. Lastly we will see the latest victim, Jessica, she is walking through the park at night and the killer has decided to follow her. The killer then accidently makes his or her presence known to the victim who becomes scared at the fact that someone is following her. At this point Jessica has leaded herself right into the forest where it appears that no one can hear her. The killer then comes out of no-where and we hear Jessica’s scream which leads into a blackout.

Brick -Analysis

Cinematography
The sequence in ‘Brick’ at the beginning has many extreme close-ups that fade into each other so the audience can get a view of the different characters. The first shot which appears on the screen after the titles have appeared is a close up of the concrete floor; this is a pan shot which slowly pans across the left hand side of the screen. The next shot which appears is an extreme close up, of a pair of male brown shoes. This then dissolves into a extreme close up of a boys glasses this shot it particularly blurry, this is not a still shot, it is moving around a little and the boy is looking direct at the camera. This is because he is looking into a prop of his which is an actual still camera. The shot of the character may be not very clear so he is not identified straight away. The use of establishing shot where the boy is leaning on the floor with his camera taking a still picture of the dead body is effective because the rule of third has been used. This is also low angle shot to express the feelings and also set the scene which is the cannel and the small river flowing through the tunnel .This makes the frame more interesting to watch. There are close ups which resemble POV shots of the boy with his camera looking at the dead body.

There is also extreme close ups of the brown heels and the hands of the dead body. These extreme close ups have a great affect on the character; it makes them feel uncomfortable because they assume it is a dead body. The camera is very still which is because it emphasises the atmosphere a little more because the audience are not too sure the body is dead, or the girl may have passed out. The shot after the establishing shot is a very slow panning, mid shot of the boy who is looking into the camera, as if it is the dead body. The same type of shots repeats however the subject is different, where the moving panning shot zooms very slowly into the girl’s hair.

When the boy is looking at the girl there is a close up of her legs. There is a mid shot used on focusing on the girl’s bracelet, which goes into a close up of the dead looking girls face. There is another mid shot which reconstructs a scene that seems to be before she died where she is putting a note into the locker. After the mid shot of the bracelet on the girls arm, there are many extreme and close ups. These close ups are used to emphasise the expression on the death of the girl; it allows the audience to investigate themselves into what may have happened. For example some may think and believe that the boy had killed the girl accidently by drowning her, because there is no blood in the scene, the body is very close to the shallow water. The next scene is after the titles have appeared in the screen, which is ‘BRICK’ the type of font is bold and in white this straight away condones the feeling of power because it contrasts against the black background, the titles moves away into the screen. This affects the audience, very much informs them that this is a thriller movie.

Mise-en-scene
When the boy is introduced, he is wearing brown shoes, this links back to the first shot where the audience see them and now they are aware that they belong to him. They also link to the girl’s heels which are also brown. As an audience they feel this movie maybe set maybe a decade or more ago, due to the costume used the looks like it’s the type of fashion for that time. The type of props used use are a major key to this opening sequence because when the opening sequence starts, the props indicate what it may be about and the expressions that may be expressed for example a shot of a knife will indicate danger and my even be death. The prop used is the bracelet which the dead girl is wearing and this links back to the shots of the flash back where she is wearing it also. The shoes are also are one of the main props because they are shown many times and this shoes what type of character the boy may be, it seems to be smart brown shoes which indicate, a smart, obedient character as a stereotype. The clothes he is wearing is not fashioned, big named clothes its simple and without any logos. This may represent the type of person he is for example he may be a person who is not into fashion. The girl is also wearing old fashioned type of clothes which is old looking, brown, long skirts, that come down to the knee and a grey knitted jumper.

The opening sequence clearly indicates that the movie is an opening sequence because the sound that is used it slow paced and the instruments that are used is piano, metal triangles. This non- diegetic sound sets of a calm start however it then plays an echo type sound in the background which expresses a little unstable tone. Also the audience will be aware that the film is a thriller due to the way the titles appear on the screen, it is very slow and moves towards the screen.

Wallander- Analysis

Wallander

Cinematography-
At the beginning of the film Wallander, it starts with an extreme close up of the sea water, this shot very much looks like a black out. However it pans out slowly and tracks across the sea water to the land. At this point the viewers have the knowledge that this scene is an isolated lonely place to be. Its a shot with fields. There are two characters walking away from a car, shot after this is a close up of two girls who look like they are in their mid teens. At first they looked as they are just walking through the fields, however the close up shot in the car gave it away that someone has been killed and it may be the two girls. There is blood scattered over the car window, there is the man’s head on the bottom left on the frame. There is an over the shoulder of the two girls and this shot is also a tracking shot. After there is a mid shot of the main character, which gets out of his car, he looks like he is a police man. There is a shot reverse shot of him and police women. There is a point of view shot from the two girls who are leaving the scene they look directly to the man. The next scene there is close- ups of the actors in the interviewing room.

Mise-en-scene-

The mise-en-scene of the opening sequence, there is blood scattered on the car window and the two girls. The whole scene looked cold and doll due to many factors such as the clouds in the sky was dark grey this expressed a horrible feeling as an audience. However if it was a nice bright day it would express a happier, nice atmosphere. The setting of the place seems to be set in an isolated place, seems no one really goes. The props used in the scene also reflect some stereotypical thoughts that might come into the viewers mind. Such as one of the girl, was wearing a hood type jumper and a t-shirt. This straight away gave the image of ‘chav’ and uneducated girls who may be from the council estate.

Editing

The editing for Wallander is well composed; each of the shots runs very smoothly. The transitions at point were the camera is tracking at the start is covered by fast, scratchy sound which plays when the transition happens. There is the shot reverse shot used when the two police are talking. Also the main editing is just before the title, the technique match on action is used where the knife is dropped and it transforms into the letters of the film.

Sound

Sound is very important in a film, at the start of Wallander there is a low pitch sound which is non-die-getic it expresses fear, and danger its very mysterious. After this there is hyperbolic sound used to emphasise the two girls breathing which is loud and continuous. This sound affect makes the audience think what has happened and why? When the knife was dropped there was also a loud exaggerated sound of the knife being dropped. This sound affect is the transition into the next shot which was the titles.

Double Indemnity- Analysis

In the opening sequence of Double Indemnity there is a man in the background who, his face is not in the frame. The title appears on the screen in the centre of the frame, it is also a mid shot. There then is an establishing shot which sets the scene of the film, this is in Los Angeles. There is a car which is driving at high speed, where the car was very close to crashing into the workers on the road. At this point the audience have reacted with a question in their head, which is who is this character? And why are they acting in this behaviour. We then see this character that appears to come out of the car, the type of shot is a high angle shot used. The character starts to walk into a room. The next shot is a long shot of another character who is new into the scene, it then is a mid shot to show the scene and the characters body language because the characters face is not show , in the frame there is the back of his head. This character then starts to walk through a hall to a door, the mise-en-scene clearly informs the audience where this character is which is an insurance company, however it doesn’t tell the audience why? Yet. The character and the door was a mid shot.

the titles are in block, white capitals which scrolls up on the screen. the tiltes include who is starring and the types of people who are also to do with the film. titltes include

1) Assistant director
2) Assistant to producer
3) Film editor
4) Music composer
5) Screenplay
6) Produced and directed by
7) The titles include:
8) Main star
9) Supporting actors
10) Art director
11) Set decorator

Sound- the opening sequence starts off with hyperbolic sound of drums beating. The use of sound effects are very effective for example the sound of the car and the sound of her running and the way she was breathing was emphasised and this clearly shows she is out of breath she is breathing heavily and very deeply. So from the way she was breathing it made the audience may have been unsure on what is actually going on. They me think is it sound of being scared or the sound of relief? The music from the radio was diegetic and it was at a high volume which stood out and linked with the type of music that was liked by people back in them days.

Why is it a good opening sequence?
the opening sequence is very good becasue the film starts with a car and its night time with a horrible anoying non diegetic music playing. This sound is like a scratchy noise which has an affect on the audience, it makes them feel uncomfortable becasue they axpect something to go wrong for example may be the car crashes. it is driving at a high speed. the mise-en-scene condones that the films genreby adding black and dark backgrounds. the setting is a low key set with dark shadow and little light.

Analysis of Kiss Me Deadly

(Kiss Me Deadly, Robert Aldrich,1995,USA)

Cinematography

As an audience, we are shown of a women running without any shoes and she is wearing just a long coat. And there is hyperbolic sound being used which is die-getic of her breathing heavily. As an audience this makes them believe she may be running away from someone. The camera shot is a close up of her foot and changes to a low angle where the camera is a little tilted down towards her, this shot shows her very small status. After there is a mid shot of her, the women’s facial expressions are shown very clearly that she is frightened. There is an establishing shot that clearly sets the scene it is an isolated dark lonely road. There is the car that comes speeding at her and swerves; this shot has the rule of third applied to it. While the women and the man are in the frame there is space in the centre. The women’s gets into the car with the man this starts to show many shots as we see the man talking. Titles start to appear, we see the back of the heads of the man and women which is showing an over the shoulder shots.

Mise- en-scene

The costume the woman is wearing is a trench coat, which clearly indicates that she may be just wearing that without anything under. She is bare foot, that shows she may have run away from someone and she is in stress and is not really taking much notice of her appearance. The colour which used is black and white this has a very strong affect on the audience because it makes dark colours stand out and the appearance of objects. The facial expression on the women shows strongly she is not in a happy mood, more distress and in a mood were she isn’t thinking right. The car is white which gives an impression of a hero because the old impression of a hero with a white horse.

Editing

The editing in this sequence is very simple, the title scrolled down with a black background, this has an effect on the audience because it makes the white words stand out in bold. The shot of the women’s foot cuts straight into the next shot which is the mid shot. Very similarly the shots continue like this. There are some shots that are longer than others this is because the quick shots build up tension. The longer paced shots are more calm and slow.

Sound

The sound in “Kiss Me Deadly” is very important, without it there will not be the same affect because it will be just image and no sound. There is hyperbolic sound used at the beginning and throughout the opening sequence. It is of the women breathing heavily, which indicates she is out of breath. It also sounds s like she is crying maybe due to distress and being afraid. The opening sequence clearly shows that it is a thriller because of the way the titles appeared and the way the filmed started of the women out of breath and nearly dyeing from a car crash. These small techniques being used shows the type of genre it is. It is also a noir genre a type of detective movie.
