Sixth Sense Analysis

Sixth Sense

At the very beginning there is the company’s logo the distributor of the film and the co-operation, studio who are also part of creating the film. This is shown so the audience are clearly aware of who has a part in this film. After this there the titles that appear, the titles come out very slowly at the audience, this makes the audience feel cringed because the atmosphere of the whole screen, where also the sound affects start to come in when the titles move slowly. The sound is an echo and a humming typing sound however the frequency changes into high pitch, when the ‘Sixth Sense’ title appears on the screen. The titles are moving slowly which is usually seen as ghostly because it is very slow and ‘spooky’. The title and the sound straight away inform the audience that this movie is a thriller and not a comedy. This whole opening sequence usually is very important because it reflects how the film is going to be straightaway to the audience. Meaning because it’s a thriller genre, the titles come out at the audience and then reverse back into the black dark background which represents danger and the unknown. This is a good opening sequence because it does its job very well, which is to sink the audience into the film. The title appears slowly and the non- diegetic sound starts to play. The first two screen shots appear slowly, sound is used to hook the audience into the film and prepare them to watch it. The colour of the font is blue and is serif font; the letters are spaced out from each other. The words appear on top of the dark gloomy background, which feels uncomfortable to watch because as an audience I feel something may pop out and make me jump, as this is what the stereotyped views of thriller movies are.

Scene and location?
The film started off with a black out, then a bulb started to light up very slowly, the type of shot which is used is a medium shot of the bulb. Also the rule of third has been used into this frame where the bulb is on the left side of the screen. The establishing shot is a mid shot in the cellar this is obvious because the old wooden stair case and the spider webs which are on the wood. The character who is the women, she walks down the stairs. This type of camera shot is behind the shelves which look as if someone is watching her. The atmosphere of this is very uncomfortable because it is very quiet. It feels like someone is there with her. This establishing shot is very good because it condones these feelings to the audience straight away. This medium shot indicates to the viewer that this location may be very old because this type of light is being used which is old fashioned. As the women comes closer to the camera, the camera pans as she moves down looking for the wine she wants. This panning, follows her down as she finds it, this affect feels like it is the audience watching her.

As the camera pans closer to her face she looks afraid, and she turns around which continuity is used where the next shot, she is turned around however the cinematography is different it is a long shot of the women. The mise-en-scene is a low key shot where there is allot of darkness and the women’s shadow is very dark. The shot after this is another long shot of her; these long shots may be used to set the scene, as well as to show that she is alone in the cellar. The next scene in the sequence is a medium shot of cards and romantic candles lighted up. The colour red is mainly showing this represents love, warmness, comfortable and happiness. This scene is a complete different type of mood compared to the cellar.

The props in the sequence are the women’s multi coloured dress, it is purple dark gloomy colours which clearly express cold dark and danger. It’s not red and bright which expresses happiness. Her dress expresses the opposite mood. The light bulb is also a prop, when the light bulb slowly lights up this can link with the thriller movie just about to start, because this is the first shot the audience see. Also the candles which are shown after the cellar scene this scene is a different feeling , it is more warm and happiness, because it looks very romantic.
